all dressed up

After dinner (March 13), we went to the CCP to check their schedule of events. The CCP was one of Imelda Marcos’ pet projects as First Lady, and it is pretty much the only venue for high-brow cultural events here. Since there wasn’t a schedule of events for March outside, we asked the guard if we could go in. When we entered, I could hear some sort of drumming with a Latin beat and some people beginning to leave. It was funny because we were in our shorts and T-shirts, and patrons were all dressed up, some in gowns. I was wondering why they were so dressed up. But then I realized that this is the cultural venue, so where and when else would they really dress up? The gala opening night only happens once a season, if at all, so it isn’t like there is much opportunity for getting all decked out (other than balls, of course). This is the Philippines after all. The rich have to have their opportunities for flaunting their wealth.
