beginnings and endings

i created a blogger account during the early morning hours of february 7, 2008. since i am at a juncture in my life that is full of endings and beginnings, i thought it was appropriate date and time. it was chinese new year--a beginning. it was also my last day of work at the library of congress--an ending.

in trying to think of a name for the blog, i reached back to a tried and true "identity" for me--island dreamer, a name that a friend of mine and i thought of back in high school. but, since this blog is not supposed to focus on me as a person (though, of course, thoughts will always reflect the person), i changed the nomenclature to "island dreamings." when i looked up the word "dreamings" on the internet, i was led to information about the australian aborigines notion of dreamtime. i don't know enough about it to provide a definition (very few people probably can), but it conveys to me a sense of fluidity in time and space and experience.

and that goes back to my idea of beginnings and endings, which i don't see as boundaries at all. there are beginnings and endings all the time, though we may not see it that way. this year, there seems to be a lot of more obvious beginnings and endings for me. but i know that they are all part of the continuum. and i am looking forward to all the beginnings and endings that are to come....
